Bernardo Sassetti


Bernardo Sassetti was born in Lisbon, in June 1970. At the age of 9 he started studying classical piano with Professor Maria Fernanda Costa and later with Professor António Menéres Barbosa. He also attended Academia dos Amadores de Música. Dedicated to Jazz, he studied with Zé Eduardo, Horace Parlan and Sir Roland Hanna.
In 1987 starts his professional career in concerts and local clubs with Carlos Martins Quartet and Moreiras Jazztet; participates in countless festivals with musicians such as Al Grey, John Stubblefield, Frank Lacy and Andy Sheppard. Since then, and in his first 15 years of his career, he presents himself all over the world side by side with Art Farmer, Kenny Wheeler, Freddie Hubbard, Paquito D´Rivera, Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller, Eddie Henderson, Charles McPherson, and Steve Nelson, as an element of the United Nations Orchestra, and in Guy Barkers Quintet with whom he recorded the CD INTO THE BLUE (ed. Verve), nominated for the Mercury Awards 95 – Ten albums of the year. In November 97, also with Guy Barker, recorded WHAT LOVE IS accompanied by the London Philarmonic Orchestra, having as special guest the singer Sting.

As a composer he wrote the suites ECOS DE ÁFRICA, SONS DO BRASIL, MUNDOS, FRAGMENTS (OF CINEMATIC ILLUSION), ENTROPÉ – for piano and orchestra, 4 MOVIMENTOS SOLTOS – for piano, marimba and orchestra, and CONCERTO DINÃMICO for 2 pianos and orchestra, among many other pieces for small formations.

From all the recorded albums registered in his name we select the following: SALSETTI (1994); CONRAD HERWIG + TRIO BERNARDO SASSETTI – LIVE (1995); MUNDOS (1996); NOCTURNO (2002, Carlos Paredes Prize and inserted on Penguin Jazz Guide, rated 4 stars); MÁRIO LAGINHA/BERNARDO SASSETTI (2003); ÍNDIGO (2004), LIVRE (2004); GRANDOLAS (2004, Duet with Mário Laginha); ASCENT (2005, Carlos Paredes Prize); ALICE (2005); UNREAL – SIDEWALK CARTOON (2006) soundtrack; soundtrack for the theatre piece DÚVIDA (2007); 3 PIANOS (2008, CD e DVD, Trio with Mário Laginha e Pedro Burmester); MOTION (2010).

He often dedicates his time and skills composing music for cinema, writing several compositions in the last seven years from which we stand out his participation in the movie THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY (Paramount/Miramax prod.), by Anthony Minguella. For this project he recorded My Funny Valentine with the actor Matt Damon, among other songs. In partnership with Guy Barker he also composed several songs to be presented at this movie’s official premières, which took place in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Berlin, Paris, London and Rome.

His most important compositions for cinema are: MARIA DO MAR by Leitão Barros, FACAS E ANJOS by Eduardo Guedes, QUARESMA by José Álvaro Morais, O MILAGRE SEGUNDO SALOMÉ by Mário Barroso, A COSTA DOS MURMÚRIOS by Margarida Cardoso, ALICE by Marco Martins, 98 OCTANAS by Fernando Lopes, the documentary NOITE EM BRANCO by Olivier Blanc, and the short-films AS TERÇAS DA BAILARINA GORDA by Jeanne Waltz and ANTES DE AMANHÃ by Gonçalo Galvão Teles. As Soloist he took part in the movie PAX by Eduardo Guedes and in the short-film BLOODCOUNT by Bernard McLoughlan.
The soundtracks for A COSTA DOS MURMÚRIOS and ALICE were distinguished with the International Cineport trophy for best original soundtrack.

For Theatre he composed the song for A CASA DE BERNARDA ALBA (stage-directed by Diogo Infante and Ana Luísa Guimarães), FREI LUÍS DE SOUZA – A reading stage-directed by Ricardo Pais and DÚVIDA (stage-directed by Ana Luísa Guimarães), recently edited in CD.

As a concert performer, in the present time, he plays his piano solo project, in trio with Carlos Barretto and Alexandre Frazão, in duet with pianist Mário Laginha or in piano trio with Mário Laginha and Pedro Burmester.

Part of the international group Art Impressions, performing in the SHUBERTIADE show (shown for the first time in Spain, July 2007), under the artistic direction of Maria João Pires.
